Welcome to the Torrevieja Area Guide. Torrevieja is one of the oldest towns in the south Costa Blanca area. It´s principle industry used to be salt production, believed to date back to Roman times. It is said that the vogages of Christopher Columbus were funded by the profits from the salt producers.
Easily accessible from both El Altet (Alicante) and San Javier (Murcia) airports via either the AP-7 (Autopista del Mediterraneo) or the N332 Torrevieja has become an extremely popular destination for both holiday makers and ex pats from a wide variety of countries. Many investors have bought property in the area especially British, German and Scandanavian people, and as a result of this large migration many services and facilities have been set up to cater for forgein nationals in the Torrevieja area. Torrevieja (name means the old tower) has seen major growth in the last twenty years and it´s primary income is derrived from tourism and construction.
For those living or holidaying in Torrevieja there are many attractions, and almost everyone takes a trip to Torrevieja harbour where there are numerous bars and restaurants. Other attractions include the Torrevieja Water Park, Habaneras Centre, National park and nature reserve bordering the salt lakes, cinemas, bowling alleys, casino and a large number of large supermarkets and Carrefour hypermarket. One reason for the high number of foreign residents is Torrevieja´s ranking by the World Health organisation, which puts Torrveija and the surroubnding area in the top 5 healthiest places to live in the world. This is due to the micro climate created by the mounts in land and the salt lakes. Torrevija boasts one of Europe´s most modren hospitals, where staff speak a number of languages. This hospital is also where the Microsoft Corparation have decided to trial it´s newest medical software.
To the north of Torrevieja you will find Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar del Segura, La Marina, Santa Pola and Alicante. Whilst south of Torrevieja there is Punta Prima, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Campoamor, Mil Palmeras, Torre de la Horadada, Pilar de la Horadada, Campoverde, San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier.
